The measures that MIT facility managers plan to take at its campus here, for the most part, won't include cutting-edge technologies. Instead, the reductions will come by modernizing existing equipment, with a focus on lighting and on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC).

The total investment will be about $13 million over three years. The payback period will vary depending on the project, from less than one year to about eight years, according to MIT. The school plans on reinvesting the savings into more efficiency programs.

About half of the electricity reductions will come in the form of more efficient lighting systems. The university will put in new lighting products, such as more efficient LEDs, and use lighting controls, such as sensors to detect daylight or when a person comes into a room, explained Peter Cooper, the manager of sustainable engineering and utility planning at MIT.

"LEDs are really advancing every year and you can buy more reliable, proven products," Cooper said, although MIT plans to put in florescent bulbs as well, which are also getting more efficient.

A significant amount of the electricity reduction will come from modernizing the HVAC systems. MIT will put in variable-speed drives in the motors that run the air handling systems and will install a sensor system from Aircuity to monitor air humidity and carbon dioxide level, which indicates how many people are in a room.

That data, which will be fed to the Carrier building energy management system, will help determine how much conditioned air needs to be moved around. Typically, HVAC systems are designed for maximum room occupancy and run at the same rate all day and night. With the air data, the building management system can be programmed to slow down at night or to reduce the amount of air that gets pulled in if, for example, it's very humid outside.

MIT has done HVAC improvements in the past and found that about two-thirds of the energy savings come from less heating and about one-third from less electricity use by fans and motors, Cooper said.

NStar provides an incentive, in the form of a payment to MIT, for the investments in efficiency, which is funded by a small surcharge on ratepayers, said Andrew Coffin, a program manager for NStar. The utility is interested in reducing its peak-time demand, which means it can defer investments in new power generation. State regulators have also set "aggressive" targets for energy efficiency at utilities, which is also driving the utility to run efficiency programs, Coffin said.

Although many of the efficiency savings are expected to come from upgrading to new equipment, MIT is also working on changes in behavior to cut usage. For example, the university's labs consume two to three times as much as average buildings. By closing the sash on fume hoods after experiments, students can save the equivalent of two homes' energy use, while improving safety, Cooper said.

(Reuters) - The Chicago Blackhawks ended 49 years of Stanley Cup frustration with a 4-3 overtime victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday that clinched the National Hockey League's best-of-seven championship series.
Patrick Kane's goal early in the first sudden-death overtime period gave the Blackhawks a 4-2 series win for their first title since 1961NFL jersey, a drought that was the longest of any franchise in the 30-team league.
Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews, who scored seven goals in the playoffs and 22 assists including one on Chicago's first goal on Wednesday, was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as most valuable player for his team in the NHL playoffs.
Not since the days of Hall of Famers Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita and goalie Glenn Hall had the Blackhawks hoisted the CupMLB jersey, and Chicago unleashed nearly 50 years of frustration with a euphoric celebration on Philadelphia's home ice.
"The spell, the number of years that this team has been close and never won a Stanley Cup, you want to do it for every guy in your locker room and your fans but especially for guys like Bobby and Stan and the guys that came before you who made this team and this crest so special," Toews told reporters.
Gloves and sticks were scattered over the ice as Chicago players mobbed one anotherwholesale NFL jersey, while Flyers fans sat in stunned silence after Kane snuck a puck past Philadelphia goalie Michael Leighton about four minutes into overtime.
The red light to signal a goal did not go off right away but that did not stop Chicago players from celebrating. After a brief review the goal was ruled good.
"I just tried to hold onto the puck and shot at the net. I don't think anyone knew it was in but me," Kane said in an on-ice interview after the game. "This is just surreal, we just won the Cup."
Once reality sunk in for the shocked fans at the Wachovia Center, they serenaded their team's unlikely run to the finals with a rousing chant of "Let's Go FlyersNFL jersey," and then booed the winning Blackhawks.
FLYERS GROUNDED
The Flyers, who qualified for the playoffs on the last day of the regular season, also had to come back from a 3-0 deficit to the Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference semi-finals en route to booking a spot in the finals.
"The story book ended the wrong way for us," said Scott Hartnell, who scored a pair of goals for the losers.
"It hurts, it stings. Every bad adjective in the book. Obviously it's sad, you get mad. But we played well enough to be here, we deserved to be here."
Flyers coach Peter Laviolette said of his team: "I'm proud of the way they competed and the way they fought."
Chicago coach Joel Quenneville tipped his cap to the Flyers with relief that the series had a happy ending for his team.
"It's a great hockey gameMLB jersey," Quenneville said. "Philly I thought was extremely competitive. It was a great series, exciting games. Wow! Tonight's game, the pace was all-world."
The never-say-die Flyers gave their fans one last thrill when they erased a 3-2 deficit with four minutes left in regulation, Hartnell stuffing the puck past goalie Antti Niemi off a pass from Ville Leino and forced overtime.
But the fast-skating, skilled young Blackhawks denied a Flyers fairytale finish when 21-year-old Kane, a member of the silver-medalist U.S. Olympic team, blasted in the game-winner.
The first five games of the championship series had gone to the home team, but the Blackhawks steered clear of a decisive seventh game and showed their superiority as second seeds over the seventh-seeded Flyers.
Chicago's victory also passed the dubious distinction of the longest title drought to the Toronto Maple Leafs, who have not won the Stanley Cup since 1967.

(Reuters) - Tropical Storm Alex, the first named storm of the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season, formed on Saturday near Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and could be headed for the Gulf of Mexico, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.U.S.
Alex had sustained winds of 40 miles per hour (65 km per hour) and was located about 200 miles east of Belize Cityyouth MLB jersey, Belize.
It was moving west-northwest at 10 mph on a path that was expected to take it toward Belize and over the Yucatan Peninsula during the weekend and then into the Gulf of Mexico, where BP officials are battling to contain a massive oil spill.
It was too early to know whether Alex could threaten oil and natural gas production in the Gulf of Mexicocheap MLB jersey, or whether it could affect clean-up operations from the oil spill and possibly force a temporary shutdown.
Alex was expected to strengthen over water before the center hits the Yucatan Saturday night or Sunday morning. Its tropical storm force winds extend up to 105 miles east of the center. The islands of Honduras are expected to see tropical storm force winds by Saturday afternoon.
The hurricane center said a tropical storm warning, meaning tropical storm conditions were expected within the area in the next 36 hours, was in effect for the coast of Belize and the east coast of Mexico's Yucatan peninsula from Chetumal to Cancun and the island of Roatanwholesale NFL jersey, Guanaja and Utila in Honduras.
A tropical storm watch, meaning tropical storm conditions were expected within the area in the next 48 hours, was in effect for the cost of Honduras from Limon westward to the border of Honduras and Guatemala.
Alex was expected to bring 4 to 8 inches of rain through Sunday evening. Some areas might see as much as 15 inches of rainfallNFL jersey, which could cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.
"There is a low chance ... 10 percent ... of this system becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours," the center said.
Swirling masses of thunderstorms become named tropical storms when their sustained winds reach 39 mph.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 and meteorologists predict this year will be a very active oneMLB jersey. Hurricanes feed on warm water and the sea surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic are higher than usual this year.

Ravens QB Joe Flacco told the Baltimore Sun on Saturday that this year’s team is the best on which he has ever played. And that should mean something, too, considering he’s a veteran of two NFL seasons.youth NFL jerseys
“We’ve got the talent to go as far as we want to,” Flacco said. “It’s about playing up to our capabilities. I think we’ve done that for the most part.”
But in fairness to Flacco, he does have three playoff wins under his belt, including a trip to the AFC Championship Game. And what else is he going to say, that this year’s team is brutal? (Although it would be cool if somebody like Sam Bradford came out and said his college team was better than his current NFL team, which might be the case.)cheap NFL jerseys
But hyperbole or not, Flacco does have a point. The Ravens have surrounded him with enough weapons with Anquan Boldin and Donte’ Stallworth that this team could be looking at a Super Bowl or bust.
“We’ve definitely been disappointed the last couple of years,” Flacco said. “We know that feeling. If that happens again, we’re going to be disappointed. I think the fans feel the same way and rightfully so.wholesale NFL jerseys
“We want to get to the Super Bowl. We understand that we have a team to do so. We’re going to do it one of these times. We just want it as soon as possible. We think it could be this year.”
Flacco made those comments while signing autographs at a telecommunications store in Severn, Md. Hopefully, there were no adults waiting in line — as the team’s new autograph policy at training camp prohibits grown-ups from gathering signatures at training camp, according to the Carroll County Times. NFL jersey
Some of the adults quoted by the Times compare the policy to the Baltimore Colts leaving town, which seems a bit extreme. But come guys, think about the children. The children. Hopefully those mentioned in the story were able to get out to see Flacco on Saturday. NFL jerseys
